I just got a new PC and want to hook up my trusty old FPS2000 speakers to
its digital output. Problem is, the SPDIF cable furnished with the FPS2000
had a (red) 9-pin DIN plug, along with an adapter extension ending with a
(yellow) stereo 1/8" plug.

The digital output on the back of my new PC is a 1/4" RCA jack.

Help! I don't want to blindly use an RCA mono-to-1/8" stereo adapter, in
case there's an incompatibility and I fry my speakers and/or motherboard.

Is someone using this particular combo? Alternately, are SPDIF in/outputs so
standardized that someone can give me a definitive answer without owning
this particular combo? Thanks.

The FPS2000 speakers do not have a decoder for the S/PDIF bitstream that you
would be getting from your motherboard. The digital input on the FPS2000s were
for the multichannel digital PCM output that can be outputted from Sound Blaster
Live! and Audigy series sound cards, it uses 3 S/PDIF channels, each carrying
PCM output for two audio channels.

So my only choice is to use the two analog outputs (Front and Back), right?

Thanks for the help.

The digital input on FPS2000 speakers is for multichannel digital PCM input. It
does not have a decoder to process the S/PDIF bitstreams that you would get from
your motherboard. You would need a decoder like the Creative DDTS-100 to decode
the bitstream.
